PointsBet New York Launch

PointsBet NY launch date: 24 January, 2022. PointsBet sportsbook was founded in Australia and headed over to American shores in 2019. Having launched in New Jersey first, it has since expanded into many American states, which have progressively begun lifting their own limitations on online sports betting.

One of those states, of course, was New York. With the complete legalization of in-person and online sports betting, the New York State Gaming Commission had released an initial list of nine sportsbooks that had been authorized to open up online sports betting apps. In late January 2022,PointsBet NY sportsbook became the sixth bookmaker from that list to open up their services in the state of New York.

PointsBet announced this launch on their website, where they claimed to be “offering all your traditional fixed odds markets (Sports) + the world’s most exciting sports betting format, PointsBetting.”

What Is PointsBetting?

Before we delve into the various features and bonuses that we uncovered in our PointsBet New York review, we wanted to examine PointsBet’s big claims about introducing a new format of online sports wagering.

In short, PointsBetting is a high-risk high-reward format which rewards (or penalizes) you by multiplying your stake with the amount of points over or under the score that you bet. It completely eliminates traditional odds-based betting.

For instance, consider a New York Knicks vs Chicago Bulls game. If you stake $10 on there being more than 200 points scored in the game, and the match finished with a total of 205 points being scored, your bet is considered to have won by 5 points. This means that your reward will be 5x your $10 stake, i.e. $50. If the match finishes with a total of 225 points, then your reward would be 25*$10, i.e. $250!

Conversely, if the match ends up having only 185 points, then your loss would have typically been the $10 stake if it was regular odds betting. In this case, your bet is considered to have lost by 15 points, which means that your loss will be 15x your $10 stake, i.e. $150.

In traditional fixed odds betting, your outcome is either going to be the loss of your entire stake, or a fixed return based on the odds you made the wager on. PointsBetting takes the fixed odds return element completely out of the wagering process.

How PointsBetting Works

PointsBet NY sportsbook wins some points from us because of the various safety measures they’ve put in place for this new format. As you can tell, even for experienced sports bettors, this format could be a slippery slope. While it offers tremendous highs, it also comes with big potential lows.

To safeguard users, they offer a stop-loss slider, which allows you to set a maximum loss value with a handy tool that is literally a slider. This tool automatically triggers an exit once your limit has been hit. Conversely, it also brings a slight downside to your potential winnings. But that’s what hedging is all about, eh?

Another safeguard on the PointsBet app is the Balance Withheld guardrail, which shows you the amount that should be deposited in your account to pay off the maximum loss value. We think this step of making you put up actual cash can go a long way in addressing potential gambling problems, especially for new sports bettors.

Can I Place Bets On PointsBet New York?

Yes it is. PointsBet New York is a fully licensed and regulated, legalized online sports betting app in New York. As mentioned earlier, PointsBet opened up in the USA in 2019, which was a year after the US Supreme Court had struck down a federal ban on online sports betting. This was a turning point for legalized sports betting in the US, which was until then only available in the form of in-person betting at various casinos. In January 2022, PointsBet sportsbook New York became the sixth from NYSGC’s list of legal online sportsbooks to launch in New York.

In Which States Is PointsBet Legal?

As of March 2022, PointsBet sportsbook is legal in the following states:

Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

This list is likely to grow at a rapid rate as states across the US embrace legal sports betting on the internet, so make sure to bookmark this PointsBet NY review page and come back to check on who else has been certified.

PointsBet New York Features

Cash-Out

The bare minimum feature present in most online sportsbooks in the New York sports betting scene, is to have a cash-out option. There it is no surprise that PointsBet New York Sportsbook has this offering. A cash-out is simple: if you think an active fixed odds bet of yours is about to lose, then you have the option of terminating it to cut your losses. This can be used when the result is clearly not going in your favor, however there is a potential downside to it if there are late twists in the event and your original hunch actually turns out to be right.

Streaming Partnership With NBC Sports

This is one of PointsBet sportsbook New York’s biggest, most impressive features. It’s fairly straightforward – there are some niche sports and leagues from around the world which you can stream on the PointsBet app on on the website. This is generally not easy to accomplish given the cost of video streaming and even some other major bookmakers struggle with this feature. By striking up a partnership with NBC Sports, PointsBet sportsbook has been very prudent in this regard. It ties in nicely with their live betting feature as well.

Multi-Sport Parlay Bets

Same game parlays are a pretty common feature in the online sports betting world. PointsBet New York, however, offers a lovely feature that allows you to build a bet across not just multiple games from the same sport, but across different ones. So if it were possible, your parlay could feature multiple NBA games, clubbed with an NFL game, and maybe a soccer game that’s happening simultaneously. Not a lot of other sportsbooks offer this kind of flexibility.

Boosted odds

It’s always nice to be offered a little extra when you’re placing bets and PointsBet offers this from time to time. It is a feature limited to a fixed odds bet for one match in a day, for instance, and offers great value if that happens to be the match you’re taking a punt on.

PointsBetting

We’ve already mentioned this earlier in the piece and explained the mechanisms, but it is worth pointing out once again how PointsBet New York gives you the opportunity to completely subvert the traditional fixed odds bets.

PointsBet NY Website Experience

The PointsBet New York website, much like its websites in other states, comes in a modern-looking red-and-black tones dark mode. This is a refreshing change from most online sportsbooks who stick to the long-standing tradition of white backgrounds with black text. It is by no means something that improves performance on its own, but makes a marginal difference in comparison to other New York sportsbook offerings by adding a bit of contrast and making PointsBet New York promo codes and bonuses, in particular, pop up as you’re scrolling.

The website otherwise is pretty streamlined and very clearly designed to keep PointsBet’s featured bets front and center. Finding sports markets takes a bit of extra clicking to reveal the hidden sidebar menu, which can get a little frustrating in terms of discovering odds for the sports you came to bet on.

What we liked about the PointsBet New York website:

  • Slick and fast movement between pages
  • Featured bets and offers easy to find for new users
  • Bespoke red-and-black user interface

What could be better about the PointsBet New York website:

  • Dark mode is default and cannot be changed
  • Finding your favorite sports to bet on could take fewer clicks
  • The helpline for gambling problem is tiny and hidden in the footer

PointsBet App Experience

We cannot state this enough – the PointsBet app is one of the fastest apps from an online sportsbook that exists on the market right now. The visual experience is pretty much on par with the website, which means a nicely implemented professional design language was arrived at and used well. In the app too, featured bets and live betting are front and center, requiring you to open up hidden menus to find sports to wager on. But this is par for course on most sportsbook apps, and not something that can be changed given the screen size. The PointsBet NY app was easy enough to find on both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store and that wins another thumbs up from us.

What we liked about the PointsBet sportsbook app:

  • Low number of clicks to successfully place a bet
  • Super-fast loading and screen switching
  • Promos and bonuses prominent but not distracting

What could be better about the PointsBet sportsbook app:

  • An option to switch from dark mode for accessibility on a small screen
  • Navigation to find your sports could be shorter
  • Customer support button could be more prominent

PointsBet New York Promo Code & Other Bonuses

PointsBet NY offers some very generous rewards and promos, and we made a compilation of the best of them.

PointsBet Welcome Offer – Two Risk Free Bets upto $2,000 With Promo Code WELCOME

One of the best offers we came across was the PointsBet sign up bonus for New York bettors. It is extremely simple to use. When you sign up, you simply have to enter the PointsBet Promotions Code WELCOME and you automatically become eligible for two risk free bets.

What exactly does that mean? It means that you get a full refund (as a site credit) of up to $500 on your first fixed odds bet on PointsBet NY sportsbook, and a full refund of up to $1500 if your first PointsBetting bets lose.

These bets are, therefore, risk free bets. Think of them as getting two bets for the price of one – in case you lose, of course – and a nice integration into their new format that can offer some pretty lucrative returns. Note that this promo is limited to new users.

Boosted Odds On Parlays

The PointsBet New York app and website come with the same boosted parlays that were a solid feature in all their previous states. This system runs on something called Booster Tokens, which are essentially tokens you earn through wagering on their site, and which you can apply to either same game parlays or 3-leg parlays across games.

You simple create your single game parlay, or 3-leg parlay, and in your betslip you will see a lightning icon. Hitting that will give you boosted payouts on the same bets that others will be taking traditional earning proportions from.

Good Karma Payouts

This is a quirky and thoughtful feature that PointsBet NY sportsbook has introduced, and runs all the time, but is not something that you have full control over. It’s a payout that is solely based on PointsBet NY’s discretion, but can come as a relief when the outcome you bet on loses because of what PointsBet sportsbook calls “injustice” to your bet.

For example, say you’ve bet on the New York Giants to beat their opponents in the next game. But on the day of the match, your key player twists his ankle getting off the team bus and is declared unfit to play the game. If the New York Giants go on to lose the game, PointsBet may refund your bet to make up for such circumstances.

This applies to bad referee calls, season-ending injuries, and pretty much any outside factors that will influence your bet. The decision is “convened” by what they call the PointsBet KARMA KOMMITTEE®, which we think is a funny, human touch to things. It isn’t a consistent payout, but the occasional free bets are always nice, aren’t they?

PointsBet NY Rewards Points

This might seem a pretty conventional feature, but you’ll be surprised how may sports betting destinations don’t have anything resembling loyalty programs. PointsBet offers their own loyalty program, where you earn points for every single bet that you place on their platform. These points accrue in your account and can later be traded for free bets.

What Kind Of Bets Are Available At PointsBet New York?

Straight Bets

PointsBet New York offers all the typical and popular betting options that make it simple for New York bettors who are new to the scene. A straight bet is as simple as it sounds – it is a bet on a single event. Want to simply bet on the New York Rangers winning a game? Place a moneyline bet. Think the New York Islanders will score more than 3 goals in their next match? That becomes a total lines bet. These are the bare necessities on a sportsbook and we are pleased to say PointsBet NY caters nicely to those of us who don’t track every single movement or piece of data about professional sports teams.

Prop Bets

Straight bets, as we’ve explained earlier, focus on singular and general outcomes. Prop bets are a little deeper and more granular than that. The hint is in the name – prop bets is short for proposition bets. For example, in the pre-season, prop bets may look like this: Will the New York Jets re-sign wide receiver Jamison Crowder?

PointsBet NY is chock full of such propositions, both during the season and in between seasons. We found them to have a nice collection of props for New York sports bettors.

PointsBetting

We’ve already explained PointsBet New York’s flagship feature in some detail earlier in this piece, but this must make it to the list once again. It is their most comprehensive feature, or type of bet, or whatever you want to call it. Just remember to watch yourself because; any time you bet online and the payouts seem huge, it is a recipe to lose betting discipline. Never lose betting discipline.

Live Betting

PointsBet NY offers live betting, in congruence with their live streaming features sometimes, both on their app and on their website. We found their live betting tech to be smooth, responsive, and very easy to use. Speed is paramount when it comes to live wagering and PointsBet sportsbook delivered on speed yet again when we tested this feature.

Same Game Parlays

Same game parlays involve stacking up multiple straight bets during a single match, so as to increase your scale of payout at the end. For example, in a typical NBA game, you can bet on one player scoring a set number of three-pointers, on his team scoring more than a certain amount of points, and on them going on and winning the game. If you placed these bets individually, and they all came true, your returns would be far lower. The catch with the same game parlay is that for you to exponentially increase your payout, all of the wagers must come true.

PointsBet NY Sportsbook: List Of Sports

We were impressed with the vast array of sports betting options that PointsBet NY had available on their platforms. The list ran from major sports, minor league sports, college sports, and even some niche soccer leagues from Europe featured in our search. Here is a full list of sports that New York bettors can access, outside of betting on just the New York sports teams. Note that not all of them are available at all times due to seasonal schedule differences. However, this is not unique to PointsBet and all other betting sites in New York will also have seasonal sports offerings.

PointsBet New York Sportsbook: Sign up process

  1. On both the app and on the website, the ‘sign up’ option is easy to find – it is generally located at the top of the screen.
