On the heels of job cuts last December that affected staff in New York and California, alternative currency play Beenz.com said it is actively pursuing a buyer or emergency funding to keep its U.K. operations afloat.

The Silicon Alley firm, which markets technology aimed at creating a universal online currency, said an undisclosed number of employees at its location in the U.K. were let go in the latest round of restructuring.

"This restructuring will result in a number of redundancies in the London office," said a company spokesman.

Beenz.com, which makes money from selling "beenz" to retailers worldwide to offer to shoppers as rewards for loyalty or for promotional campaigns, said it is in discussions with potential strategic partners.

"The company will continue to service the global beenz consumer network from its London office, and the new rewardzCodes off-line product will continue to be available. Beenz.com will closely monitor market developments in Europe in order to evaluate future opportunities," it added.

Beenz closed a $51 million financing round last July. Since its launching, the company has raised approximately $80 million dollars in venture capital investments.

Beenz has shut down locations in Sweden and France, but maintains offices in the Europe, China and Japan.
