The company said Mathis would report directly to president and CEO Richard Forman.
Mathis is the fourth person to hold the CFO post at Register.com since last October when Alan Breitman announced his resignation. Breitman's replacement Cindy Horowitz quit the post one month later citing "personal reasons."
Prior to the appointment of Mathis to the post, the company had been outsourcing its financing operations to the firm of Tatum CFO Partners LLP. Arthur Goldberg, a partner in Tatum CFO Partners, was acting in the post on an interim basis.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Forman said Mathis would be a "strong resource" for the company's success in the highly-competitive domain name marketplace.
"Rene is a key addition to the register.com senior management team, bringing wide industry knowledge and experience, having served in various senior financial capacities at leading companies," Forman said.
Mathis previously served as CFO of Infogate Inc., a Web-based news, information and alerting delivery service. At Infogate, Mathis was credited with orchestrating the company's second round of funding and its merge with EntryPoint.
Prior to that, Mathis acted as VP and controller of Thomson Learning, a subsidiary of the Thomson Corporation, where he was responsible for the company's two financial and accounting service centers in Ohio and the United Kingdom.
He also served as CFO and director of The New York Media Group Inc. from 1994 to 1997, where he structured a management buyout.
